What is an Esthetician?

Estheticians, also called skin care therapists, work at salons, day spas, and medi-spas.

Estheticians are trained in the cosmetic treatment of the skin.

They perform various cosmetic procedures including facials, body treatments or more.

Most estheticians offer a variety of specialty spa treatments.

All estheticians must be licensed in the state that they are working in.

They complete 600 hours of training (depending on the state)

and pass both a written and a practical, or hands-on exam.

A good esthetician also completes many hours of post-graduate education

and strives to stay abreast of the latest developments in skin care.

Estheticians are not medical doctors so they can't diagnose skin conditions

prescribe medications, or suggest treatment for any skin condition

outside of cosmetic products.

They can however, perform treatment complementary to a doctor's treatment.

Some estheticians may work closely with dermatologists

either in-office or through a referral system.

Signs of A Good Esthetician

  • He or she is impeccably groomed, warm and friendly.
  • She is a stickler for cleanliness and sanitation. She keeps a clean table and washes her hands before she begins touching your face.
  • The esthetician gives you a relaxing facial customized to your skin.
  • She can do extractions without causing too much discomfort and is responsive to your pain threshold.
  •  She can answer any questions you have about what she’s doing and why.
  • The good esthetician follows your lead in terms of how much “chat” there is. It’s your time!
  • She asks about your home skin care routine and advises you on how to take care of your skin between facials. She advises products are best suited for your skin without being pushy.
  • A good esthetician recognizes skin problems that require a dermatologist. If you have a problem that needs a medical doctor, the esthetician lets you know
